If you have lots of images you are converting to a format, say making a bunch of thumbnails from a group of images, you should check out ImageMagick it is a free tool for Linux, Windows and Macs, that batch processes images.

Gimp is the software I use for doing all of the stills and animated graphics as well as for working with the digital pictures I take. It is open source, free, available for Windows, Macs and Linux and has an excellent manual.

Any fool can create gorgeous eye candy given enough megabytes. The trick is to keep it small enough for even the users on cell phone connections to download. The web is moving to a mobile environment and you don’t want your site left out.

Colors are very important to your site. The same information given in different colors can totally change how people view your site. A black background with white text gives a very different impression than black text on a white background.

Fonts and layout also effect how the user views your site as well as the message you are trying to convey. The fonts, layout and colors work together (hopefully) and let people know what age group you are trying to reach, whether your message is serious or humorous etc.
