Installing, finding and using Gimp plugins
So you want to do more with the Gimp now that you have the basics down. There are hundreds of plugins for the Gimp in existence and more coming all the time.
Installing and using a Gimp plugin:
- If it is a .gzip, tar.gz, .zip, .rar file unpack it
- Copy it to your gimp/plugins folder
( usually \lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins )
or ( /lib/gimp/2.o/plugins ).
On my Mac I put new plugins in ( /Users/herself/.gimp2-4/plug-ins )
That’s it. It will be there the next time you start up the Gimp.
Finding Gimp plugins:
- Most plugins can be found in the Gimp Registry
- TechZilo has a list of 40 favorite plugins
You can also try PSPI which will let you run some Photoshop plugins in Gimp

Hullo to yourself
Only got to know about you today after weeks of searching for a good Gimp-stuff-site in my
online-surf-search for anything Gimpish. Your site is very good I used a Google-search of:-
A site for any/all info about The Gimp, its tutorials etc -
to latch onto you

Hello!
Very new to Gimp and your site has some truly great tips. Recently retired (Friday!) and, armed with a Mac, camera and Gimp, I am ready to laze my days away.
Just want to clarify one thing. I’m using Gimp ver.2.4.4 and I would create the folder /Users//.gimp2-4/plug-ins and not something like /Users//.gimp2-4-4/plug-ins ?
Keep up the good work!

Sorry, I was at a conference and just got in…
When Gimp installed it should have created a .gimp folder in your home directory. Mine is like your first /Users/me/.gimp-2.4/plug-ins.
Unless Gimp created the 2.4.4 folder I’d leave it and use the default one it created.

Gimp didn’t create a directory off the users folder for me. After a little searching, I found it under the Gimp.app. I right click on Gimp.app and pick “”Show Package Contents”". Under that I see contents/resources/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins
Have I done something wrong?

If Gimp is working for you I wouldn’t give it another thought.
You can install it so it works for all users or just for yourself. Since I’m the only person on my computer I just install it for myself.
Sounds like yours installed for all users. Which is a good thing if you share your computer and won’t harm anything if it is only you.
